The doctor sits with me and they explain everything, even tell kids to open mouth, so we show Mom everything. And they did really helping me that time. And still I see whenever I come with Usman, Dr. Kollmann is coming out, sit with me, and they still explain same way they did for long time ago.
Because they are used to explaining me, and not just me. Whenever they come out, every parents, I saw them, they call parents, explain everything, how to treat them, how kids need to take care of teeth, and if they have a problem, what they eat, they not eat, everything. So that is really easy, even Usman, we don’t want something to eat, when he goes inside for treatment, Dr. Kollmann come out and ask me, “What do you want?” And I tell them, and then they come with Usman, and say same word, “We don’t want it for him.”
So he tell front of him, so he understand, because he really trusts doctors. Because this trust is long-time trust with him. So, whenever doctor say, he said, “Don’t eat this one,” or “Don’t do this thing,” he believes them.
And he came home, and we don’t have a problem again to do this thing with him. So, it’s really good for us.

My kids do not have anxiety coming to the dentist, and that is very unique. They oftentimes will come together with their cousins, and when we walk in here, it’s like, they almost view it as a playground, and they’re quite comfortable. This practice is really a state-of-the-art modern practice where you are not only getting that modern facility and seeing the state-of-the-art equipment and TVs available for the kids, and toys, and all of those glamorous little touches. But you’re also getting the old-school feeling of being greeted by a doctor who will communicate with you face-to-face, who will communicate with you over the phone, follow up on your messages that you leave, and you are not just left to, you know, send a message and wait for a reply. You’re really taken care of in almost in a real old-fashioned way, but in the best facility.
When my daughter, my second child, my daughter was a newborn, she was strictly bottle-feeding. And we were having issues where inserting the bottle into her mouth would actually create a gag reflex, and she would spit up any of the food that she was being fed previously. So we brought her to Dr. Furusho, and she was able to assess the structure of her mouth, the way her tongue moved, the way she was latching onto the bottle.
And she was able to help us to navigate whether it was a speech therapist we needed to see or an ENT to do the actual procedure of releasing a tongue tie. And it was just very comforting to have her input and her guidance when figuring out the best way to solve this feeding issue, and make sure that she was getting the food and the nutrients that she needed.
It felt like we really had someone that knew us, who was involved in that process. Some of the other specialists we were going to weren’t as familiar with our family, and Dr. Furusho offered to follow up with us as needed. We had an emergency number if we need it, and we were able to really rely on her.
The doctors, you know, really encouraged us to take care of our kids’ teeth before they even had teeth. So that kind of right there, you know, put a precedent in my mind. They gave them these little baby toothbrushes and, you know, just kind of told me, like, just, you can even start brushing their gums and, you know, just get them used to that sensation and whatnot. And so I was like, oh, okay. Like that would not have ever occurred to me, you know. So I definitely felt well-informed. And after each visit, you know, they’ll talk to me, you know, personally, just take me aside and just go over what they did and, like, what needs to be done and the next steps and when we need to come back or anything like that. So, I do feel, like, prepared and the kids know what to do too.
What I think sets this practice apart is, you know, just the environment of being so kid-centered and everyone here is so friendly. Everyone is so nurturing to the children. And like I said, the kids just love coming here. Whether it’s, like, the games or the movies or the little goodie bags they take home, or, you know, just like everyone is just so friendly and yeah, personable that, I mean, they love it. I can’t even imagine. I didn’t have this growing up, going to the dentist. And I still, like, didn’t mind going to the dentist, but, like, I can’t imagine. I would’ve loved it, you know, if I had this. And the climbing thing, I mean, they’re just like, they think they’re going to, you know, a playground or something.
He just got really skinny and he wasn’t, like, gaining weight even though he was breastfeeding and we were supplementing with formula. I mean, I was giving him bottles and bottles, and pumping and pumping, and formula and breast milk, and he just wasn’t gaining weight, and, you know, we saw lactation consultants. We took him down to the children’s hospital and saw consultants there. We took him to the pediatric chiropractor who was trying…They first were like, “Maybe he’s just kinda twerked from the birth and he just has tension and whatnot.”
But, like, nothing was really helping and the not gaining weight was concerning his pediatrician. And so I was like, “Well, I don’t know what else to do.” I’m literally giving him bottles of formula, bottles of breast milk night and day. I was up all night. I was, like, in tears being like, I just felt so helpless as a parent and it was scary. So, I figured, you know, this was our last shot, I guess.
And the scariest part was that they took him back without me, and that was, you know, my first time being separated from him. And then they brought him back and immediately said, you know, “Put him on the breast and try to get him to nurse.” And he latched, like, right away, and so it was such a relief. I literally was crying tears of joy because it was such a relief. And yeah, I mean, obviously, I’m getting emotional talking about it but it was such a gift to know that that problem was finally solved.
They’ve had sealants. They haven’t had cavities yet. Thank goodness because they come every six months. But it’s like a layer of protection that they put on their molars in the back to prevent from getting cavities. And they have done great with that. I mean, they, you know, when they’ve had that done, they told me, you know, some of the taste is a little bit weird, a little bit different. It was a pretty quick procedure to do. And it went well.
So for every six months that they come, they do go over the cleanings with them. Once they do the exam, they’ll hit any points where they see they need to do a little bit more work in those areas.
And they go over how to brush those specific areas so that they’re working on that when they go home. And then when they come back in those six months to see if they’ve, you know, improved and just helping them keep the hygiene together. And then for the procedures, like for the sealants, they always come out after the visit and speak with us of what is needed for are there any treatment that’s needed and why that treatment is needed.
I love coming here with my two daughters because we feel very at home when we come to Dentistry for Kids. They have been coming since they were 2, so they have that kind of relationship with the doctors where there’s trust, and they are very comfortable with going back to the operatories, and getting their cleanings, and having their exams done with the doctors.
It’s very kid-oriented, very kid-friendly. When you walk in, they have a little play area, so kids, obviously, kind of gravitate to that, and they already feel comfortable because they’re like a place to play. So they kind of get to, like, hang around for a little bit while before they call them back for their exams and their checkups.
They love getting their prizes, of course, afterwards. That’s their favorite part. And the doctors are just very kid-oriented. They know how to work around with the kids, with their personalities. All the kids have different personalities, so they work around that. They make them feel very at home or just more at ease because just coming to the dentist is kind of scary, especially for little kids, and they just make sure that they feel at home and comfortable here.
I like coming here because I get treated very well. I feel like I’m always comfortable here, even, like, when they’re doing stuff that I don’t like. Like sometimes when they’re, like, with the scraper, they have to pick at your teeth, kind of get the plaque out. They comfort me, they make me feel relaxed, they make me feel safe, and it’s just a great experience. They try to calm me down if something’s, like, bad. Like awhile back I had to get a crown re-cemented and they had to use a drill to get some of the glue off. And they asked me, like, do you feel comfortable not, like, having anesthetics? Like do you want some of the stuff to calm your nerves on your gums? And I’m happy that they gave me that. And they also just help you, like, calm down in situations like that.
I’ve had a tooth pulled, I’ve had to have a root canal. I have also had to have two crowns put in. When I was younger I had a crown that came out and it was a baby tooth, so they pulled that tooth out as well. I had to get a band in, which is to help keep the space between teeth open so that the tooth here where I got the tooth pulled out when I was about 5 could grow in and have enough space. Like I said awhile back, I had my crown re-cemented. I’ve had seven cavities, I believe. They would help me relax when they’d have to give me the shots to calm the nerves in my gums. They would just, like, tell me that if I would just relax, it would be over quicker and just, like, to relax a little and they helped you calm down very much.
When we first started to come here, my son had a fear of the dentist. He had several cavities in his mouth. They took him into the office. They treated him with respect. They calmed him down. They got him to go back into the chair and let them perform the procedures on him to get his teeth fixed. It’s a relief to me as a parent that my son can come here and be treated so well, given the services that he needs, and be just treated outstandingly.
Michael had to have a crown put in, he had to have a tooth pulled, and he had to have a root canal, at a very early age, which was a lot for a little child to have to go through, and they treated him extremely well through it. They were very patient with him. Sometimes we would stay a little bit longer, that way they could comfort him in the chair back there and get him what he needed to get done in order to get his mouth better.
Every time I come in they explain to me what’s gonna happen to him, what procedures he’s gonna get that day. And then afterwards, there’s always a follow-up with the doctor to explain to me what they saw, what they found, and where we’re gonna go forward.
We came in first, you know, about 26 years ago, I think, at least 26 years ago, with our son, oldest son, who is autistic. And we were referred to this practice from our kids’ pediatrician, and they said that, you know, these are the best people to deal with, as best dentists anywhere, especially with the special needs.
And initially, when our son was coming in, he wasn’t sitting in the chair, so he was sitting on the ground, and the dentist would, you know, the doctors would sit with him on the ground and start brushing, helping him with the brushing, teeth, and everything.
And he would even pinch them, and they would just say, “All right. That’s fine, we can tolerate.” So how they deal with him, and, you know, it just made us, you know, way more, more and more welcoming. And, you know, so we just felt so comfortable that all three of our of our kids, I don’t think they have seen any other dentist but this dentist, this practice only.
And the biggest thing is that now, even if he’s in pain or something, we call them up, they know him, so they’ll bring us in, you know, on the short notice. Sometimes even lunch break, they don’t take the lunch break, instead of lunch break, just have us bring him in, and they see him right away. And sometimes he doesn’t even need any kind of treatment, he just needs the assurance from doctors that, okay, you know, you’re okay.
So he comes in, they check him out, and they said, you know, “Everything is fine, you’re good.” So then he feels good, he feels comfortable. Then he goes home, and then he doesn’t complain about the aches or any kind of pain. So that’s how he, you know, he’s adjusted, well-adjusted here, this practice.
It’s just how the hygienist, when they come in, you know, they initially explain what the procedure is going to be taking place, you know, whether they’re doing the exam or, you know, if they’re doing any more treatment, they explain it to the patients and the parents. So, you know, you just basically know beforehand what they’re doing. And even during the procedure, if they need any extras or anything additional, they’ll come out and ask you before they do that so, you know, there’s no confusion or disagreement or whatever.
But so, you know, they walk through the whole process in detail, so you feel comfortable. I’ve seen with the other part, we’ve been coming here for, as I said, you know, more than 26 years, but I have seen with the new patients too, you know, when I’m sitting here and seeing the new patients coming in and they treat them the same way, too. So it’s their bedside manners are really awesome. I don’t think that I have had any experience like this with even my own dentist, you know, they don’t, I think, have, you know, spent that much time with explaining all the issues and everything.
I would say comfort. Everyone, like, the hygienists, the reception, the doctors, everyone was very, like, comforting. Made us feel, like, calm. If we’re scared, they didn’t continue. They, you know, comforted us. Explained things to us even when we were super young, and so that really was helpful.
Like, if they could tell that you’re more stressed out and whatnot, they’d be more silly, but if they knew that you just wanted to get it done, they would, you know, just get it done depending on the person. And so I think it was just very much good at reading people and being comforting.
Now, as an adult, I’m like, “I can’t pick from erasers when I’m done with my appointment, you know?” But no, it made me feel very comfortable and set up good practices for me going forward because I know what a good doctor is and a good dentist is.
Because of this, obviously, they’ve tailored just maintenance where, like, making sure our teeth are healthy, that we’re eating good, and everything. And I mean, it’s just overall taught us that teeth are very important for your body, I mean, like, and explain things to us without scaring us which is always a good thing.
The doctor sits with me and they explain everything, even tell kids to open mouth, so we show Mom everything. And they did really helping me that time. And still I see whenever I come with Usman, Dr. Kollmann is coming out, sit with me, and they still explain same way they did for long time ago.
