During COVID, we saw a lot of emergencies because people had shut down their offices even to emergencies. And even now we see a lot of emergencies just paging us and calling us. Patients that are our patients, but also patients who are new patients who just can’t get ahold of their dentist.
So, being a pediatric dentist, I always tell new pediatric dentists that as a mother, if you can’t get ahold of your pediatrician or your pediatric dentist, it’s scary, right? If your kid has an accident or if your kid has a really high fever or something. So, as a pediatric dentist, you need to be somehow available to those parents and those patients. So, we see a lot of emergencies.
As far as emergencies are concerned, we have an emergency number that parents can text anytime that we are not in the office. So, we are always closed on Wednesdays, always closed on Sundays. We have some Saturdays during the school year, but we always tell the parent that after hours, evenings, weekends, Wednesdays, Sundays, 6:00 in the morning, 2:00 in the morning, they have the ability to text us.
We ask them to text their first name, their last name, their date of birth, and what the problem is. And what’s great about technology and text is that you can send me a picture. So, if your child falls, cracks a tooth. Hey, text me a picture, send me what it looks like. Send me, you know, a picture of whatever happened, and then we can triage it. I’ll call them or I’ll text them back. What’s great about text is that if I’m driving and my phone is hooked, I can just listen to what the message is and I can text them right back. We try to answer within minutes if we can get to the phone.

Here are some of the most common types of emergencies we see and a few steps you can take ahead of your little one’s appointment:
- Toothache – Rinse their mouth with warm water and apply ice to the outside of their cheek to alleviate pain and swelling.
- Broken Permanent Tooth – Gather any fragments of the tooth and bring them to the appointment. Ice can help minimize discomfort and swelling.
- Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth – Gently grasp the tooth by the crown (the white part) and place it in a container filled with milk. Bring it to your appointment. The sooner you can get to our office, the greater the chance your dentist can restore the tooth.
- Soft Tissue Injury – Use gauze or a damp tea bag to control the bleeding. If bleeding persists for several minutes, proceed to an emergency room or urgent care facility.

Any situation where your child is in pain or may suffer lasting damage to a tooth without speedy treatment is an emergency. Some of the most common emergencies include cracked or broken teeth and toothaches. A toothache can signal problems like severe decay or even infection. We’ll want to see your child ASAP so we can diagnose their problem and get them feeling better. In many cases we can offer you a same-day appointment.
No one can anticipate every possible dental emergency, but you can take steps to reduce the odds of your child having such a problem. Following ADA recommendations – brushing and flossing daily and getting regular dental cleanings – reduces their risk of tooth infections and gum disease. Plus, wearing athletic mouthguards during sports can protect your child’s teeth from injuries.
